Numeracy is the ability to use maths skills and understandings confidently and appropriately to meet the general demands of everyday situations. Children learn about numeracy through play, observing, exploring, talking about their environment and inquiry.

FOUNDATION YEARS NUMERACY
At Mount Eliza North Primary School we develop numeracy in the foundation years through play, observing, exploring and talking. We play with shapes and jigsaws, notice patterns, use formal and informal measurement and begin to use and recognise numbers. We use the language of maths to help describe our lives and experiences.

MIDDLE YEARS NUMERACY

Numeracy is an area of priority for all Senior School Staff at Mount Eliza North Primary School. We have been working collectively to develop a thorough and effective mathematics curriculum.
At Mount Eliza North Primary School teachers use the `whole part whole’ approach to teaching mathematics. We group the students in order to provide support for different learning styles. Students are encouraged to talk about their learning, to explain and justify their mathematical reasoning and to reflect on their learning.

Children develop numeracy skills when they use mathematical ideas in their everyday situations. They begin to make sense of these situations by asking questions such as: How many?
Does it fit?
Which way will I go?
How big is it?
How much is there?
Will there be enough?
As parents, how can you help in your child’s mathematical development?
Help your child to learn and enjoy using their mathematical ideas in daily activities, such as cooking, shopping, reading maps, planning a party, setting a budget, etc.

How can families and Mount Eliza North Primary School work together?

  • Talk with your child’s teacher about numeracy at home and at school and raise concerns with them.
  • Ask the teacher how you can support the class mathematics program at home.
  • Help your child to enjoy the mathematics they do at school by talking positively about work they bring home.
  • Support the school by attending parent meetings/interviews/open night (Student Led Conference).
  • Find out how mathematics teaching has changed since you were at school.
  • Maths Share activities are presented weekly in Kalori. These activities are designed to be simple and fun and can be completed by your family at home using materials found in your house.
