FOUNDATION
YEARS
The Prep to 4 Foundation Years program, builds on the experiences
that children come to school with, to help them develop strong literacy
skills and nurture a love of reading and writing.
The children are provided with a stimulating literacy environment
and work on the individual skill development of their individual skills
at point of need. The Foundation Years program promotes both a one
hour reading and one hour writing block in the morning.
Children participate in shared, independent, modelled and guided reading
and writing activities. Daily reading at home is promoted and borrowing
from the school library is compulsory.
Opportunities to display the literacy skills that are developing are
also encouraged outside of the classroom. Children have opportunities
to participate in assemblies, debates, Night of Notables (Grade 4)
and Junior School Council.
Active participation by parents is encouraged in classrooms and training
sessions in Parent and Literacy Partnerships are offered throughout
the year.
MIDDLE YEARS
The grade 5 and 6 Literacy program also encourages the children to
access and enjoy a broad range of quality literature.
In a world where information is so readily available, children are
taught to evaluate and be critical of the texts that they read.
Children experiment with a wide variety of literacy text types and
are provided with numerous opportunities to present their work to
a variety of audiences.
Senior school students participate in additional activities, such
as the school production, J Rock, Junior School Council, assemblies,
debates and presentation ceremonies. These provide students with practical
occasions to use their developing. literacy skills
THRASS
In 2004 Mt Eliza North Primary School introduced the THRASS
spelling program. This is a phonics based program in which children
are taught to distinguish between consonant and vowel phonemes. In addition
to children being taught their initial sounds, they are also provided
with the phonemic sound groups that words in the English language form.
Opportunities for parents to learn more about this program are offered
throughout the year.
